This is the way it was in 1984 in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series. Here at the Roses Stores 300 lap race at South Boston Speedway on June 23 the drivers meeting is being conducted by the NASCAR Busch Series Director Robert Black. Dickie Boswell has just made a comment that has Busch Series Chief Scorer Tim Hudson and others laughing. This group of drivers include two that are in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Jack Ingram and Dale Jarrett. Other drivers of note include Sam Ard, Geoff Bodine, Tommy Ellis, Tommy Houston, Rick Mast, Glenn Jarrett and Joe Thurman. Ard in the prime of his career would start on the pole and lead 276 of the races 300 laps that night. Dale Earnhardt Sr put in a dominating performance in the GM Goodwrench Dennis Fischer powered Pontiac at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Busch Series fall race in 1986. In a 42-car Busch Series field that would include seven future NASCAR Hall of Fame members and eighteen drivers that were either current or future Winston Cup regulars Earnhardt was in a class to himself. He won from the pole, finished10.9 seconds ahead of second place Darrell Waltrip leading 192 of the races 200 laps. Running 11 of the 31 Busch Series races in 1986 he would win five times, have three second place finishes and was third once. In only two races did he finish out of the Top Five.
