The balloons are in the air for the start of the 1989 Peak Performance 500 Winston Cup Series race at Dover Downs in Delaware. Crew members on pit road are securing the drivers in their cars just before the command to start engines. Davey Allison is on the pole alongside Alan Kulwicki on the front row. Both young drivers would race for four more years, and each would die in aircraft accidents in 1993 just months apart.
Richard Petty in full "King" mode at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway at the February 24, 1980, Richmond 400. Petty coming off his final Winston Cup Championship in 1979 would start and finish third in this race. He would record two wins in 1980. Eventual winner Darrell Waltrip heads back on the track in the 1984 Transouth 500 at Darlington Raceway. Terry Labonte would finish second the only other car on the lead lap.
