  • The Changing of the Guard -La Citadelle de Quebec - Quebec City - 2016

The Changing of the Guard -La Citadelle de Quebec - Quebec City - 2016

The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place daily at 10 a.m. in summer on the Citadelle's parade grounds with The Chateau Frontenac Hotel serving as a backdrop. The Changing of the Guard has been a tradition at the Citadelle of Québec since 1928 except for a brief hiatus between 1939 and 1945. The ceremony features soldiers of the Royal 22e Régiment decked out in their scarlet regimental dress and bearskins as the "new guard" relieves the "old guard" after 24 hours of sentry duty at the Citadelle's entrance. The ceremony is based on the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. It is a must-see experience for visitors to Quebec's capital.

  • Peggy's Cove - Nova Scotia - 1991

    Peggy's Cove - Nova Scotia - 1991

Peggys Point Lighthouse, also known as Peggys Cove Lighthouse, is an iconic Canadian image. The cove was once known as Margaret’s Cove because of its location at the entrance to St. Margaret’s Bay. When abbreviated, it became Peggy’s Cove. Located about an hour's drive from Halifax we had to get there very early in order to get a clean shot without flocks of people at this highly visited site.

Curious Amish Boy - Bird in Hand, Pennsylvania -1979

As the Amish do not like to be photographed, I was trying not to be intrusive. I was on an overpass near the town of Bird in Hand on the Old Philadelphia Pike kind of out of the way when this carriage came by on the road below. This young boy had seen me up above as they approached and then took a look back while trying to manage his hat.

  • Guard House - La Citadelle de Quebec - Quebec City - Canada - 1972

Guard House - La Citadelle de Quebec - Quebec City - Canada - 1972

This is one the colorful guard houses that sat outside La Citadelle in Quebec City 50 years ago, in 1972. The ones they have today are much more finished but similar in their paint scheme. The Citadelle of Quebec, also known as La Citadelle, is an active military installation. It is located atop Cap Diamant, adjoining the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City, Quebec. The citadel contains the oldest military building in Canada, and forms part of the fortifications of Quebec City. The Citadel has been the Royal 22e Regiment’s home base since 1920.  During the summer, you can witness the Changing of the Guard Ceremony where the guards who have been on duty for the last 24 hours are replaced with new ones.

    Krautwachterhaus - Salzburg, Austria - 1971

In English, this is the Herb Keepers Cottage as viewed from the Hohensalzburg Fortress which dominates Salzburg, Austria. I visited this site again 42 years later in 2013 and with trees grown around the house it didn't make for an interesting image.

The tantalizing view for a prisoner from the end of Alcatraz facing the Golden Gate Bridge. Was it a blessing or a curse to see this while incarcerated on the Rock?

    Twin Towers - New York - 1984

After a racing sponsor presentation in New York in 1984 Charlie Luck and I ended the day at The River Cafe under the Brooklyn Bridge. As we looked across the river at the World Trade Center, I noticed a plane headed that way and thought it would be interesting to try to capture it right between the towers. Could not imagine the destruction airplanes would make on this site 17 years later.

  • Guinea - Gloucester Point, Virginia - Early 1970's

Guinea - Gloucester Point, Virginia - Early 1970's

In the early 1970’s I was visiting a friend that lived on the York River. We decided to explore over on the other side of Gloucester Point, to an area that was called Guinea that had an interesting history. We came into Severn and just down the road we saw a pier with an old, weathered building. It was surrounded by boats with fishing nets and anchors stacked around. It called to be photographed in black and white. The area known as Guinea began to be defined by land patents around 1651. The people, referred to as Guineamen, spoke with a certain accent descended from the early colonists and some still speak the rapid-fire, cockney-like dialect that was once the only language there. They were excellent watermen earning their living fishing, crabbing, clamming and dredging for oysters. I shared a room at Riverside Hospital in Newport News in 1968 with a Guineamen and listening to him and his relatives that visited speak in that barely recognizable language made for an interesting experience.

  • Percé Rock - Bonaventure Island - Three Sisters Cliffs - Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec - 1988

Percé Rock - Bonaventure Island - Three Sisters Cliffs - Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec - 1988

Just think, at one time all of this had to be connected. What happened to tear it apart like this? The small town of Percé, Quebec is located at the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula about 500 miles from Quebec City. It lies along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. First visited in 1534 by Jacques Cartier, Percé is now a fishing port and summer resort. Offshore, but connected by a sandbar at low tide, is Rocher-Percé (“Pierced Rock”)—a rocky island 290 feet high that is pierced by a 60-foot-high arch and another nearby tourist attraction, bird sanctuary Bonaventure Island. This view includes the Three Sisters Cliffs, one with a white cross at its top, and a view of the natural amphitheater of the Percé village, the Percé Rock and Bonaventure Island.

  • Gaspe Fishing Boats At Percé Rock - Quebec - 1988

Gaspe Fishing Boats At Percé Rock - Quebec - 1988

For centuries cod fishing was a prime industry and export for Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula. This colorful group of Gaspe fishing boats were found along the shore in the village of Percé with the signature image of the Gaspé Peninsula, the gigantic red Percé Rock, rising from the Gulf of Saint Lawrence as a backdrop.

A Navajo Indian on his horse at John Ford's Point in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, on the border between Utah and Arizona.  John Ford’s Point commands some of the most celebrated views of Monument Valley, and is named after the film director who shot some of the most classic films of the American West there. These include the movie Stagecoach, which starred a young John Wayne, Fort Apache, The Searchers,  and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Stags Leap District Grapes - Silverado Trail - Napa, California -1988

I had the opportunity to do some serious exploring of vineyards and wineries throughout Napa and Sonoma near harvest time in 1988. One of my favorite areas for Napa wine, especially Cabernet Sauvignon, has been in the Stags Leap District along the Silverado Trail. Found the light just right on these Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and vines at the Shafer Vineyards.

  • Stellar Sea Lions - Buoy FR - Juneau, Alaska - 2006

Stellar Sea Lions - Buoy FR - Juneau, Alaska - 2006

Stellar Sea Lions gather on the Faust Rock navigational buoy in Auke Bay, just outside of Juneau, Alaska. Buoy FR is a popular spot for the sea lions and others to hang out in the middle of the bay. While there we saw sea lions swim up to the buoy and circle around it looking for the smallest animal that was on it. Then they would come up out of the water and pull the smaller one off the buoy and take its place on it. You can see here that several of the smaller ones are looking hard at what's going on in the water that might be a threat, while the big bull is unconcerned of a challenge for his spot.

  • El Santuario De Chimayo - New Mexico - 2012

El Santuario De Chimayo - New Mexico - 2012

El Santuario de Chimayo, is a small shrine located in New Mexico along the High Road to Taos. It has been a place of worship since before its construction in 1813. Indigenous Indians, Spanish and Mexican settlers and other people of faith have traveled to the site of El Santuario to ask for healing for themselves and others since the12th century, long before the initial Spanish conquest of New Mexico. It is a well-preserved small adobe church with twin front towers with belfries, wooden doors, a wall-enclosed garden, and an arched gate. El Santuario is one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States. It is known as Lourdes of America, as it attracts over 300,000 pilgrims each year. Thousands of pilgrims walk to El Santuario from Santa Fe and other starting points during Holy Week.

  • Clock Tower Cafe - Museum d'Orsay - Paris - 2013

    Clock Tower Cafe - Museum d'Orsay - Paris - 2013

This view is through the clock face at the Musée d’Orsay Clock Tower Cafe in Paris. It is located at the 5th floor of the museum and on the same floor as the impressionist paintings.    The building opened as Gare d'Orsey, a train station in 1900, but the platforms later became too short for more modern trains. It became an art museum in December 1986. It now houses the world’s largest collection of impressionist paintings . Up on the hill to the left, you see the silhouette of the La Basilique du Sacré Coeur de Montmartre, better known as Sacré Coeur . The Ferris Wheel on the right is in the Jardin des Tuileries, just outside the Louvre across the River Seine.

  • The Church of Saint Vincent - Heiligenblut, Austria - 2013

The Church of Saint Vincent - Heiligenblut, Austria - 2013

According to legend, St. Briccius, after obtaining a vial of the blood of Jesus, was buried by an avalanche, and when his body was recovered, the tiny vial was miraculously found hidden within one of the saint's open wounds. The town gets its name, Heiligenblut (Holy Blood), from this event. Today the relic is housed in the chapel of this small but beautiful Gothic church. Completed in 1490 after more than a century of construction under the toughest conditions, the church is marked by its soaring belfry tower. The sharply pointed spire is backed by Austria's tallest peak, the Grossglockner. Heiligenblut is located at the entrance to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, Austria's equivalent to our Blue Ridge Parkway.

  • Mormon Row Barn - Grand Teton National Park - Wyoming - 2014

Mormon Row Barn - Grand Teton National Park - Wyoming - 2014

The T. A. Moulton Barn is within the Mormon Row Historic District in Teton County, Wyoming. Mormon Row was settled in the late 1890s by Mormons from the Salt Lake region.  The barn sits west of the road known as Mormon Row, in an area called Antelope Flats. It is within the Grand Teton National Park, with the spectacular Teton Range rising in the background.  Henry Fonda was at the barn one day while filming the movie, Spencer’s Mountain. I visited this site three different days over a week in September 2014 before I was able to get a clear day and the light in the right direction.
